Myopia Control
Ball and Gatehouse Opticians are proud to work alongside Hoya to bring you MiYosmart spectacle lenses, the latest innovation in curbing myopia (short sight) in children.
If your child is short sighted (has problems seeing things in the distance) then Miyosmart lenses might be a solution to preventing the short sightedness getting too high.
High levels of myopia can lead to all sorts of visual and eye related conditions that would not be present if the eye was not short sighted. Clinical trials have shown that Miyosmart lenses slow down myopia progression by up to 60%.
Myopia is caused when the child’s eye is longer than it should be making the image form in front of the retina instead of on it. This makes the image that the brain receives blurry. Normal spectacle lenses refocus the image to the correct point on the retina therefore making the image clear. Unfortunately there is still peripheral blur that the spectacle lenses can’t correct. This causes the eye to keep growing and in turn increases the myopia. So whilst normal spectacle lenses correct the blurry image they don’t stop or slow down the onset of increasing myopia.
Miyosmart lenses work by slowing down the growth of the eye (known as the axial length) with revolutionary DIMS technology applied to the surface of the lens.
Miyosmart lenses look no different to ordinary spectacle lenses. They are made of impact resistant material and have a UV block and anti reflection coating. They are backed up by a 7 year international study and have been available in the UK since Jan 2021.
Nicola Gatehouse was amongst the first few dispensing opticians on the wirral accredited to dispense Miyosmart lenses.
Miyosmart are currently not available on the NHS but can be purchased privately either outright or by direct debit. Our current direct debit price on Eyeplan is £41 a month and all Eyeplan benefits such as Optomap and accidental damage cover are also included.
